I just don’t get it – what’s it all about?
Sound familiar? Everyone on Twitter has asked themselves these questions as some point; we’ve all wondered about the purpose of it, and whether we’re ‘doing it right’, haven’t we? We’ve all had those doubts; those little niggles about whether what we’re saying or doing is what’s expected of us. And whether it will get us those coveted followers, and with it the little buzz that comes with seeing your numbers increase each day, that feeling that we’re appreciated, that somebody wants to hear what we’ve got to say; that we’ve got a voice worth listening to.
So how do you do it? How do you make those numbers increase?
What’s your strategy?
Strategy? That’s for sport isn’t it? Or high level business development? I don’t employ a strategy for Twitter, like Nike says, I just do it….
Well, what if you were to think about it a bit more? If you really want those numbers to increase, what are you doing about it? Just wishing that people will follow you by osmosis? Or actively taking steps to work out the reason that they might not be following your? Or the reason why others are?
Here are 3 questions you might want to ask yourself to help clarify your strategy and help you to build that invaluable following most people so desire.
- Why Tweet? – For what reason are you on Twitter? What’s your purpose for Tweeting? Is it marketing? Is it to learn from others? Is it to keep up to date with what’s going on in my business sector? Is it to keep tabs on competitors? Do you have a reason and a purpose, and if not, what are you doing on there? Maybe that’s the question you should be asking yourself – what makes me think I need to be on Twitter? Anyway, if you do come up with a clear answer and purpose, this will help you to define your market – exactly who you are Tweeting to or who you want to following. Look out for hashtags they might use, conversations and debates they might join in, headlines and relevant topics they would be interested in. In other words, fish where the fish are.
- What should I say? – If you want people to follow you then you will have to give then a good reason to – say something interesting, something that will add value to what they do, who they are and what they are interested in. Share relevant information, articles, and comments, join in a discussion – give them something that will be useful and relevant. When other people recognize your Tweets as valuable, they’ll start to follow you.
- How should I say it? – Well, that’s a whole different blog from another day, and you’ll find more detailed answers here. But if you put yourself in your audience’s shoes, how would you like to hear it? Would you like to be told in a shouty, patronizing way, or is there a gentler more subtle, more invitational way to share information and help others to realize your value? How do you make people feel when you Tweet? Do you Tweet to them in a way that values them or in a way that demeans them? Do you knock down their front door with a big fist or do you find a more inconspicuous way in?
Having a Twitter strategy might not be such a bad idea after all; it can help you to think about where you want to start, and how you might want to move forward. It can help you to plan for what you want to happen, and to reflect on what has happened, and it’s easy to measure if your strategy is working – just check the numbers.
Plan what you want to happen or just hope for the best? Take your fishing rod to puddles or go where the fish are? Offer the fish tasty bait they can’t resist or a sharp pointy hook? What will you do today – increase your catch or come home empty handed?
